Vermont to lead effort to write new science standards

first_imgThe state of Vermont will be among a group of states selected to lead an important effort to improve science education for all students.?Vermont is one of 20 states that will lead the development of Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), which will clearly define the content and practices students will need to learn from kindergarten through high school graduation. The NGSS process is being managed by Achieve an education reform non-profit organization.?‘Vermont has always had rigorous science standards, but it was time for them to be reviewed, said Armando Vilaseca, Vermont Commissioner of Education. Being a lead state will give Vermont access to current edge research and thinking around scientific principles. This partnership will provide content insights to inform the incorporation of engineering in science instruction and provide new, engaging learning opportunities for all students.’?The 20 Lead State Partners are Arizona, California, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Vermont, Washington and West Virginia.‘The Lead State Partners will provide important leadership and guidance throughout the development of the Next Generation Science Standards and are to be congratulated for making a strong commitment to improving science education,’ said Michael Cohen, president of Achieve. ‘This will be a collaborative process that will lead to a set of standards that provides America’s students a strong foundation in science and supports college and career readiness for all.’?The development of the Next Generation Science Standards is a two-step process. The first step was the building of a framework that identified the core ideas and practices in natural sciences and engineering that all students should be familiar with by the time they graduate. In July, the National Research Council released A Framework for K-12 Science Education, developed by a committee representing expertise in science, teaching and learning, curriculum, assessment and education policy.?The second step is the development of science standards based on the Framework. As a Lead State Partner, (STATE) will guide the standard writing process, gather and deliver feedback from state-level committees and come together to address common issues and challenges. The Lead State Partners also agree to commit staff time to the initiative and, upon completion, give serious consideration to adopting the Next Generation Science Standards. In order to be considered, states had to submit a letter with the signature of the Chief State School Officer and the chair of the State Board of Education.?American students continue to lag internationally in science education, making them less competitive for the jobs of the present and the future. A recent U.S. Department of Commerce study shows that over the past 10 years, growth in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) jobs was three times greater than that of non-STEM jobs. The report also shows that STEM jobs are expected to continue to grow at a faster rate than other jobs in the coming decade.?‘There is a clear benefit to providing our students with the strong science education they need to compete in college and the work place,’ said Stephen Pruitt, Vice President of Content, Research and Development at Achieve, who is coordinating the NGSS effort. ‘A strong science education provides all students with opportunities to be successful in the 21st century.’?For more information, visit the Next Generation Science Standards website at www.nextgenscience.org(link is external)last_img read more

Compliance: Efforts underway to reduce MSB service burdens

first_img 6SHARESShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblr Credit unions serving, or considering serving, money services businesses (MSBs) could see reduced compliance burdens on several fronts. MSBs, which can be currency dealers, check cashers, or issuers/sellers of traveler’s checks, among other things, often present compliance issues due to increased regulatory scrutiny, and are a popular topic of discussion at CUNA’s Bank Secrecy Act school.First, the Nationwide Multistate Licensing System (NMLS), designed to keep track of bad actors in the mortgage licensing area, expanded its functionality in 2012 to include MSBs. Currently, 34 state agencies use NMLS for MSB licensure, and more agencies are expected to follow as laws and regulations are adjusted.Additionally, there is a state effort underway to develop a unified MSB call report. The Conference of State Bank Supervisors reports that this will provide state and federal regulators with standardized information about MSB activities that will allow them to better assess risk and identify trends. This should result in reduced compliance burdens for credit unions servicing MSB accounts, and also prevent MSBs from being excluded from traditional financial services. continue reading ?last_img read more

Cricket News Happy Birthday Herschelle Gibbs – The first man to hit six sixes in ODIs

first_imgBefore Gibbs, Sir Garfield Sobers and Ravi Shastri had become the two players who had hit six sixes in an over but Gibbs became the first to achieve the feat in ODIs and in limited-overs cricket. After Gibbs, Yuvraj Singh hit six sixes in Twenty20 Internationals when he clobbered Stuart Broad in Durban in the 2007 World T20.However, Gibbs is best remembered for the remarkable 434 match against Australia in the 2006 ODI in Johannesburg. The 2349th ODI was a record-breaking match, with Ricky Ponting’s brilliant 164 helping Australia to a record 434/4 in 50 overs, the highest-ever score in ODIs. In response, Gibbs launched a breath-taking assault. He notched up his century off 79 balls and he ended up with a mind-boggling 175 off 11 balls, including 21 fours and seven sixes as South Africa chased down 434 to win a dramatic ODI.In the 872 runs scored on that day, Gibbs’ 175 was hailed as one of the knocks for the ages and it established him as one of the best at that time. At the same venue in the 2003 World Cup earlier, Gibbs struck a magnificent 143 against New Zealand but at that time, New Zealand were boosted by a knock of 134 from Stephen Fleming as the Proteas were stunned. The other lasting incident that cricket lovers will remember Gibbs for was his dropped catch off Steve Waugh in the 1999 World Cup encounter in Leeds. Waugh, who was steadying Australia, flicked a full ball to mid wicket where Gibbs took the catch but in trying to celebrate, he could not control the ball and ended up spilling the catch. Waugh, apparently, at that time told Gibbs, “You have just dropped the World Cup, maite.” The drop proved costly and Australia won the match to qualify for the semi-finals where they again met South Africa. The match ended in a tie and South Africa exited the tournament in the most cruel manner.Although his image might have been tarnished by the match-fixing scandal, there is no denying that Gibbs is one of the best batsmen South Africa has ever produced.? New Delhi: Herschelle Gibbs had a stellar career for South Africa starting from 1996 till his final international days in 2008. The right-hander, termed as the next Jonty Rhodes due to his magnificent fielding abilities, was one of the best openers for South Africa for a long time. In 90 Tests, he smashed 6167 runs at an average of close to 42 while in 248 ODIs, he blasted 8094 runs at an average of 36. The South African top order benefited greatly from Gibbs’ ability to change the course of the match with an audacious knock at key moments in the match. On his 45th birthday, we remember Gibbs for three major knocks which have defined his batting and career. In the 2007 World Cup match between South Africa and Netherlands at Warner Park, St. Kitts, Gibbs entered the record books and entered an elite list of players to have achieved this feat. South Africa chose to bat and Jacques Kallis provided them a stable platform. In the 30th over bowled by young wristspinner Daan van Bunge, Gibbs chose to etch his name in the record books. The first ball disappeared over long on while the second ball was dispatched over long off. The third ball was hammered over long off for the third six and thumped a full toss over deep midwicket to near a record. The fifth ball was short and Gibbs crunched the pull shot over wide long off and the record was made when he smashed a flighted ball over deep midwicket to become the first player in ODI history to hit six sixes in an over. Herschelle Gibbs became the first player to hit six sixes in an over in ODIs.Gibbs’ 175 ensured South Africa chase down 434 against Australia.Gibbs dropped Steve Waugh in the 1999 World Cup encounter. highlights For all the Latest Sports News News, Cricket News News, Download News Nation Android and iOS Mobile Apps.last_img read more

Super Eagles Coaching Job Thrown Open

first_img“A small team of eminently –qualified persons with the required pedigree will take charge of the process, and the best candidate would be selected, irrespective of whether he is indigenous or expatriate.”Meanwhile, former Flying Eagles Coach, John Obuh, has called on Super Eagles players and all and sundry to get behind newly appointed interim senior national team handlers. The NFF announced on Wednesday that the quartet of Salisu Ibrahim, Alloy Agu, Imama Amakapabo and Kennedy Boboye will work with the NFF Technical Director, Shaibu Amodu for next month’s friendlies against Mali and Luxembourg. Thus, Obuh who led the Flying Eagles to Colombia 2011 and Turkey 2013 FIFA Under-20 World Cups while saluting the choice of the tacticians by the NFF, he also called on the Super Eagles players and all stakeholders to back them towards succeeding.“It is a very omen for Nigeria football. We should not forget that Imama is topping the league and Boboye is coming from behind, they are all doing well,” Obuh told Goal.com“As long as they have a good coordination from Amodu Shaibu which I believe they will get, I am very impressed they will succeed.“It is not all about what the coaches will tell the players or what the players are going to do, it also involves everybody, I mean the fans, the managers and sponsors of the team.“We have a lot of down falling of our football system and we must put hands together to be able to resolve it.“I just pray that the players are not going to be political or join sides on what is going on. The coaches too need to concentrate and do their beats to ensure their inputs are felt after the friendly games.“And for the stakeholders in Nigeria football, they should wake up and let us solve our problems together.”The Kwara United gaffer also bares his mind on whether the country should settle for an indigenous coach or an expatriate as Eagles’ permanent coach.“It all depends on the supports. Either is good enough but all depends of the kind of support they get,” he continued.“Whatever the NFF thinks they can give to the foreign coach, if they give the indigenous coaches that would be very nice.“The colour of skin deceives us a lot, we might have given the local coaches time to proof their worth, but have we given them the wherewithal to succeed? All I know is that no foreign coach would accept the kind of treatment meted out to our local coaches.“For now, I would advice we stick with our indigenous coaches till everything is stabilized because as it stand, no one is talking about our financial capability to hire an expatriate,” he concluded.Share this:FacebookRedditTwitterPrintPinterestEmailWhatsAppSkypeLinkedInTumblrPocketTelegram Olawale Ajimotokan with agency reportThe Technical committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) rose from its meeting in Abuja on Wednesday to among other decisions throw open to all candidates the vacant Super Eagles head coach position. The committee wants the best candidate irrespective of nationality to be hired to lead Eagles in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers starting in October. The interview for the Eagles post will be before the June 24 draw for World Cup qualifiers.“After the friendly matches (vs Mali and Luxembourg), and before the 2018 FIFA World Cup group phase draw, the technical committee will initiate the process for the selection of a substantive technical crew for the Super Eagles, with a head coach,” said part of the communiqué from the meeting.last_img read more
